Security Degree Hub Featured Articles

SDH has compiled some exciting features highlighting the security field. Whether you are interested in a career in the Military or Cybersecurity, government agencies or private entrepreneurship, a career path in security can be rewarding to individuals with a strong sense of protecting and serving.

Understanding the Security Industry

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
― Benjamin Franklin

The security industry is growing by leaps and bounds, at a pace that makes civil liberties experts nervous and private security companies thrilled. You may not feel you need to understand the entire big picture of the security industry, but if you’re going to have a career in the security sector, it never hurts to keep yourself informed. Security Degree Hub’s Features on the state of the security industry give concise but detailed information about where we stand nationally in the realm of security education and business.

Our article on the growth of the security economy is a great place to start. It’s important to understand why many colleges and universities are offering security degrees today. With every product we consume, the cost of security can be calculated (ie. safety costs of risk management and cybersecurity). Just a fact from the article: “the security economy is estimated to be 20% of the US GDP.”

Technology and Security

It’s been said that WWIII will be fought online, and there are many who say it is already well underway, though most civilians aren’t aware of it. In any case, the internet is the fastest-growing and most intensely important field in security. Just look at the major data breaches in 2018 alone:

  • Quora had 100 million Users data stolen in December of 2018
  • Facebook – 30 million users had personal info hacked from the platforms “View As” feature
  • Twitter user’s phone numbers exposed mid-October
  • NASA employs 17,300 people, and one employee switching departments caused a server to fail and open up a personal information breach across their base

Like anyone in the security industry, SDH is keeping our eyes on the technological realm with features on technology and security:

Features Just for Fun

“The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.”
― Jane Addams

The security industry can attract some real characters. For instance, who would you say is the most famous bodyguard? Undoubtedly, the answer has to be Laurence Tureaud, who no one dares to call anything but Mr. T. T (as his friends call him) was a nightclub bouncer after mustering out in the army, where he developed his tough-as-nails character. Supposedly, his massive pile of gold chains started when he would pick up patron’s necklaces, usually after a fight. If the patron was banned for fighting (and brave enough to show his face again), he could find Mr. T wearing his necklace at the door when he came back for his chain. Apparently, not many dared come back.

His indomitable personality made him a popular bodyguard for famous people, including Michael Jackson and several people who would not seem to need a bodyguard, like Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee. Working friendships with the stars led to a career as a heavy in movies and TV, and ultimately his irrepressible likeability made him a hero to millions of kids in the 1980s.

Security Degree Hub likes to lighten things up from time to time with features that are just for fun – new security products, interesting historical anecdotes, and life-or-death trivia. After all, it’s security – it can’t be all fun and games.
