Security in American Samoa

American Samoa is a 76 square mile unincorporated United States territory situated in the South Pacific Ocean. The territory consists of five volcanic islands, with Tutuila being the largest island. Tutuila is also the main island of American Samoa, accounting for 95 percent of the population (approximately 56,000 people currently live on the island). Tutuila is popular with tourists as the island offers relaxing beaches, mountainous regions for hiking and shore activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Other than the tourism industry, the main economic activity in American Samoa is tuna fishing and tuna processing plants. One of the most beautiful areas of American Samoa is the National Park of American Samoa on Tutuila. This 4,900 acre preserve protects the local environment including two species of bats. The park contains an excellent network of hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts.

Security Job Outlook in American Samoa
Security jobs in American Samoa are possible with two large agencies in the territory, the American Samoa Government Department of Homeland Security and the American Samoa Department of Public Safety. The American Samoa Government Department of Homeland Security is involved in the areas of counterterrorism, emergency management, critical infrastructure protection and criminal intelligence. The American Samoa Department of Public Safety is the law enforcement agency of the territory.

Financial Aid in American Samoa
Scholarships and other financial aid may be available for those attending American Samoa Community College. The American Samoan Government Financial Aid Program provides 50 scholarships for college freshmen in the amount of $5,000. The scholarships apply to a variety of majors and applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, Resident of Samoa, or dependent of a citizen of American Samoa. In addition, the Financial Aid program at the American Samoa Community College provides financial assistance for students wishing to further their education. In order to qualify for this financial aid, students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that is available from the territory’s high schools, the FAFSA website or from the American Samoa Community College.
